2009 FirstStep.me Consultancy Question of the Year!

Lets Make Perfume!I want a career in which I can make perfume. Where can I study this profession and are there any opportunities in South Africa, where I am based?

FirstStep.me says: Cool question, well according to Wikipedia, a Perfumer is an expert at creating fragrances. The actual studying of the profession has only recently been done with professional schools opening to train individuals. We looked online to see what is available to individuals looking at this career and we found three varied options which provide ways in which to become a Perfumer. Note: regarding South Africa specifically we couldn’t find any online promoted institutions that catered for a career as a Perfumer.

Well… it’s pretty random, I’ve started studying Engineering Design in 2000 but not for too long, after one year I left the university and took a gap year in my country until I decided to go to USA in 2002 where I’ve learned English and rode my bike almost every day (no school at all).  All this time off was enough to realize what I wanted to do, what I really wanted to study and that was Advertising and Graphic design, so I started all over again in 2003 in Medellin, Colombia the City where I was born. Creativity it’s always been in me, creating, wondering, imagination, guessing, asking, looking, expressing and so on…

I’m Regional Chief System Architect for GijimaAST, looking after all IT related projects on the East Coast, from the Mozambique border to George and all of KZN and Eastern Cape.  I’ve always been interested in Computer Science. I start tinkering at age 5, then matriculated with Computer Science and Advance Maths as my 7th and 8th subjects, the others being English, Afrikaans, Maths, Biology, Physics and History.  After that I was a Rotary Youth Exchange student to the USA where I truly fell in love with the art of Computer Science.  I later went on to complete a Bachelor of Science Honors in Computer Science at the University of Cape Town.

1. Okay so you just finished graduate from University, now you working at a very cool and distinguished company, does that make you think that every minute of studying paid off or do you feel this is the stepping stone to your big career plan? In all honesty, the second I stood on the stage at grad for my 3 seconds of fame, all the hours of studying, missing out on friend’s birthdays due to never ending tests and exams, tears of frustration when the results board refused to reflect the mark you really knew you deserved, all became but a distant memory. All in all, any form of studying will pay off. However for me, this is just the beginning…
