As one has probably been able to tell from reading other ‘Roaming Newton’ submissions that I have written, I don’t travel out of KwaZulu Natal that much! This is a result of a number of reasons. The most obvious is the shoestring budget that I operate on as a student stuck between semesters. By not having a massive resource of funds available at the blink of an eye, students often have to be wise in their choice of entertainment. In this case local, very local that is, is definitely lekker!

For anyone who has the slightest interest in game viewing, wildlife and nature in general, the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is defiantly a must. The park is situated roughly three hours from Durban. For people travelling from Durban the reserve is well situated, as it is ideal for both day visitors and those who want to make an extended holiday out of the experience by staying at one of the renowned and well-kept camps.

We made a worthwhile day trip to the reserve, which is only made a little more expensive than your regular weekend excursion with the family due to the rising petrol prices. Despite this, the entrance fee to the park is only R35 for South Africans. The worst part of the trip was the time of departure in the morning. In order to get a full day’s worth of game viewing we left at about 4am. Taking into account that visitors must leave the park by 7pm during summer months due to light restraints, one literally does get a full day of entertainment for their meagre R35.

Roaming Newton Chapter One:

MOZAMBIQUE Part 1: MAPUTO
Getting to Maputo

“An adventure around every corner” is the only way one can describe Mozambique. With extremely friendly people, awesome beaches, pothole infested roads and giant mosquitoes, what more can one ask for in a ten-day holiday? The trip from Durban was quite pleasant, driving through Swaziland to get to Mozambique turned out to be the quickest route. The boarder posts for all three countries were also surprisingly efficient. Once in Mozambique the ideology of a true Third World country hits you like a ton of bricks. Development is scarce and buildings stand incomplete or uninhabited. Abandoned cars on the side of the road rusted with time give you a scary first impression. However, that all changed once in Maputo.

Mike Murphy writes about his adventures around the globe!

Denmark
If you found some European countries to be expensive then keep away from Denmark. Due to their strong currency, you can end up paying a lot more than you would have wanted to. However, Denmark is a great country for seeing some thing a little different. I spent most of my time in Copenhagen, and it’s a great city for tourists with many things to see and do. Also there’s no problem with the languages if you are an English speaker, as almost every one speaks very good English, some thing that is integrated into the school system.

In true FirstStep fashion we decided to find ten Reasons why a career in Print Media Rocks. So instead of doing the usual orthodox method of listing reasons, we decided to merge two mediums to give us a resultant! (Huh?!) No, we are not talking about creating a time and space continuum, rather we found ten movies that have roles of characters whom are involved in print media. If that’s not ten reasons that rock then what is?!

1. All the Presidents Men: starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford. The movie portrays how two journalists from the Washington Post uncover the Watergate Scandal which led to then US president Richard Nixon resigning from office.

2. Shakespeare in Love: Lots of Academy Awards and involves the tale of the Young Shakespeare!

3. Spiderman: Yes Peter Parker is a free lance photographer for the Daily Bugle Newspaper.
